Douglas College Network Shutdown Feb. 12



Douglas College will experience a full computer and network systems shutdown between 9pm on Thursday, Feb. 11 to 6am on Monday, Feb. 15 in order to relocate the College’s main server and network equipment room to a new, safer location. This will effect both the New Westminster and Coquitlam campuses.

Although some services and supports will be limited during the shutdown (see below), both campuses of the College will remain open to the public.

There is never an ideal time to schedule this; however, doing it during study break causes less disruption to classes and allows the College to meet expectations for completing the work within the timelines the Ministry set as a condition of receiving Ministry funding for the project.

During the shutdown, the following supports and services will not be available:
  • Internet access from on-campus (includes Wi-Fi) 
  • Logging-on to College computers 
  • Banner 
  • FAST Portal and Reporting 
  • Blackboard 
  • myDouglas 
  • Student ID 
  • LaserFiche 
  • Qlikview 
During the shutdown, the following College areas will be closed at both campuses:
  • Registrar’s Office
  • Cashier
  • Bookstore
  • Library, including access to all electronic library resources outside the college (i.e. journal databases, online catalogue, and ebooks)
  • Student Employment Centre
  • Douglas International
  • DSU Coquitlam 
However, the following services will still be available during the shutdown:
  • Security
  • Parking
  • Food services
  • Smartphone access to email and other services not dependent on College wireless network
  • DSU New Westminster

The outcome of this necessary move is our IT infrastructure will be housed in a safer location to protect critical services for students and employees. Additional upgrades will follow to improve connectivity and processing speed. This is a necessary first step toward improved IT services for years to come.
