Douglas College website gets a makeover

By Anne Swinton, Web Supervisor

Visit the Douglas website on Tuesday afternoon (Jan. 17) and you'll be in for a surprise. We're giving the site a makeover - part of the College's whole new look and feel. We hope you like it!

You'll notice our new logo and colours, as well as design changes, which we hope will make your experience on our site that much better.

You'll see bigger photos accompanying our feature stories at the top of our home page, and bigger links, headers and text, making the site easier to read.

As far as practical information and links go, we've made minor changes. But two to note are that the International Education link has been moved into the main navigation bar, and the Visitors link has been moved to the very top of the page.

So? Do you like the changes? We'd love to hear your feedback.

  1. I think the size of the headers, such as Get started, Top resources etc, is much too big. And that the font type for the rest of the content is out of place. It looks old fashioned compared to the new "modern, progressive" logo.

I also think decontructing the word Douglas made it look more like children's buidling blocks, not something stimulating and engaging. This is not a good representation of a post-secondary institution.

And using OUA as a central image is not a good representation of Douglas College. It makes people ask "What's OUA?" The central image should be instantly recognizable. Instead, it seems like we're promoting Ontario University Athletics. If OUA was meant to be a person, or a student, it missed the mark.

I like the key brand message of "Do what you love. Be good at it." (And apparently, so does Fanshawe College...) I just don't think the new logo represents that.

  3. the serif font is much too busy - something simpler and cleaning looking please. The top half the main page looks professional and modern and the bottom half looks messy and unclear.

  4. Its neat, making the header from where it says Douglas college ect + the search bar closer to the A-Z directory ect would help not make it such a long scroll down to the Douglas log in. Which I generally visit this page for. Love the font though.

The graphics on the redeisgned website are too big, too slow to load, and take up half the page so that one has to scroll down to find any meaningful information. Can't open the website on my Blackberry - get the message that the page is too large - and it shuts down. The spidery version of the serif font (Garamond? Bookman? - looks for all the world like a slightly updated Courier from the old fixed-spacing printer days) used for the sections below the graphic are too light, too hard to read, and clash with the Helvetica-style sans-serif headers and Douglas College wordmark.

As for the new logo - it's cluttered and cutesy and conveys absolutley nothing about the college. Ug(ggh). Agree with the previous poster - Do UG Las is meaningless. OUA - meaningless. The design on the bags and cups is cluttered and looks (sadly) like strings of binary code, circa 1990. Black and 1970s avocado refrigerator green - perhaps that's the UG in Do UG Las.

  6. What a weak design. Go back to the old one.

  7. Like the new website but the feature story and headers are way too big, you have to scroll down too much to get to the important info, such as notifications, but other than that love the new website (aside from not being able to access it well on my Blackberry).

The logo is certainly no better than the last (it says nothing about Douglas College). Breaking up Douglas into "DO UG LAS" is horrible...sound it out phonetically, if you don't agree with me. It sounds like a caveman's mating call "Do ugh lass!" The OUA is ridiculous, it looks nothing like a person and has no meaning at all (and it sounds like the sounds said caveman would make after successfully completing his mating call).

I miss the "Curiosity, Inspiration, Passion" etc.

  9. I agree. The new logo really puts the UG in Douglas. Not impressed.

  10. I personally don't see what people are complaining about. I love it. It's bold and bright. The last layout was dull. Yes it's different but things change and are not meant to stay the same forever. The block letters are a bit awkward though. Overall, Good Job!

  13. Hi Becky,

The redesign was done internally and was part of the day-to-day work of the web designers in the Marketing and Communications Department. So no extra cost was involved.

    Cheers,

    Tamara

  15. Awesome design... sometimes boring and weird people live afraid to new things. normally, those people hide themself behind ANONIMOUS names, critizicing everything instead of privide and share their ideas.
    Anyway I like it...

  16. I find the links just as easy to follow but prefer the old logo and home page story layout, just my personal opinion.

The new home page design is loathsome. The sickly, pale green text is difficult to read. For example, the top left corner, prime space, is used for a large and relatively unimportant notice about Information sessions. That is not the first thing on my mind when considering which courses I would like to take at Douglas. I just want to know what you offer. I strongly suggest for those interested in elegant web design to check out BCIT. It works beautifully throughout and is a pleasure to use for the potential student.

  18. Guess what? They paid 85 THOUSAND dollars for that logo! EPIC FAIL.

  19. Agree with earlier comments. Stacked logo is UG ly, serif fonts are a bizarre choice for online viewing, font sizes seem disproportionate, feature image headlines are far too small. Visually, it's a miss.
