The Conservative government’s announcement last week that it intends to ban niqabs at citizenship swearing-in ceremonies should serve to remind us of three things: first, the importance of freedom in a liberal democracy; second, that a basic litmus test for action by legislators should be whether there is a problem that needs fixing; and third, that for the Harper government politics so frequently trumps all else.

Are bloggers journalists? A Douglas College expert weighs in

A blogger in the U.S. was recently ordered to pay $2.5 million in damages to an investment firm over blog posts that criticized the organization and one of its co-founders. The blogger, Crystal Cox, said her posts were based on information from an outside source, and refused to reveal that source. Cox, who calls herslef an investigative blogger, cited Oregon’s shield law, which allows journalists to protect their sources.

The judge ruled that as a blogger, Cox was not a journalist, and could therefore not claim the protections offered to traditional journalists.

Was that a fair ruling?

Apply for the Douglas College International Studies Award!

Are you planning to take part in a Douglas College study abroad activity or a study abroad activity approved by Douglas College in the coming year?

Applications are now being accepted for the 2012 International Studies Award.

Every year, a minimum of 20 awards of $500 each are given to qualified applicants. To qualify:

• you must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant
• at the time of application, you must be enrolled in a Douglas College academic program of at least a two-year duration that offers a Douglas College credential upon successful completion
• you must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher

Application deadline is Friday, March 2, 4pm.

Douglas College Marketing students partner with Better Business Bureau

The BBB was so chuffed with the results that they're planning to offer Marketing students mentorships, work experience and volunteer marketing gigs in the new year.

Rocky, a six-year-old Tibetan terrier cross, sits patiently on a table in the Animal Health Technology (AHT) lab at Douglas College’s Coquitlam Campus while a student feels his belly and checks his heartbeat. Though he suffers from bad teeth, Rocky is looking pretty good these days. His fur is soft and curly and his eyes are clear and calm.

He’s come a long way.
