Douglas College Valedictorian encourages peers to have faith in themselves

Like many kids, Azzaria Bramer fantasized about becoming a musician or a movie star. But by the time she was 12, she knew she wanted to help people stand up for themselves. This led to her wanting to become a criminal defense lawyer.

She's not far off. Azzaria graduates as Valedictorian this week with a Diploma in Youth Justice. "Being in the program is like being a lawyer," she says, "in that we advocate for our clients."

Douglas College Valedictorian sets the stage

As a kid Jessie Paynter was into everything artsy: music, acting, sewing, writing, dance and painting – this last activity sometimes done on the walls of her home. (“My mother was not impressed,” she reports.)

It wasn’t until Grade 8 that Jessie discovered stagecraft. The first time she worked backstage on a show, she knew she’d found her calling. “I left the theatre afterwards, but my heart stayed behind.”

• you will find out earlier whether you successfully registered for your desired courses. This will allow for advance planning around other commitments, such as work and child care, as you’ll know your course schedule that much earlier.

• information on course demand will be available earlier, to allow the College to plan for additional course offerings where possible.

Douglas College Valedictorian takes career in hand

At the age of 19 Barbie Murphy left her hometown of Kingsville, Ont., for Vancouver to pursue her dream of becoming a make-up artist in fashion and film.

Ten years later Barbie is working with her hands – though not in the way she’d planned. “After seven years in the field I found my soul was not satisfied with my chosen career path, and began to re-evaluate,” she says.

Another Douglas student vies for Miss World Canada!

Last week doug featured a student who was entering the Miss World Canada pageant. Now we have discovered there are actually two Douglas students in the running. This week, meet Elnaz Bondar, who's getting her Associate of Arts Degree in Psychology. As part of of the competition, Elnaz is raising money for Variety, to aid children with special needs. Volunteer, see the world, give back

You love your classes, dig your part-time job (well, maybe) and have your dream job firmed up in your mind. But at the same time, you want to travel, see the world and make a positive impact along the way. How can you do this while you're still a student?

Truth is, you're in a great position to apply for volunteer/intern abroad opportunities that can take you everywhere, from Argentina to China, from Romania to Ghana, to work in positions that either directly relate to your studies or that you have a keen interest in. Positions last from just a few weeks to several months, and are offered by a ton of different agencies.

Blizzards, chemical spills, power outages, a dangerous person on campus. These things are not likely to happen, but sometimes an urgent situation does present itself. If one does, wouldn't it be great to be in the know?

To that end, Douglas College has implemented an emergency notification system (ENS) to keep the College community connected in an emergency situation. The ENS will relay key information to ensure continued safety of students and employees.

The Douglas College Emergency Notification System is made up of three parts:

DC Announce
A public announce system capable of broadcasting at both the David Lam and New Westminster Campuses.

DC InfoLine
A toll-free information line to contact the College for important messages and updates: 1 877 679 0823.

DC Alerts
Allows the College to provide urgent information alerts to subscribers via:

• Text message
• Recorded phone message
• Email

Note: to receive DC Alerts you must subscribe.

How do you subscribe to DC Alerts?
Subscribe to DC Alerts through Student Self Service in myDouglas. Log in at myDouglas.ca with your student ID and PIN. Once logged in, access the “Self Service” box on the right side of the first myDouglas page. Go to the “Personal Information” link, and click on “Update Emergency Notification Information.”

Here you will be able to provide:

• an emergency notification telephone number
• an emergency notification text/SMS number
• an emergency notification e-mail address
