40 after 40: Dean Wutke

Long before the days of the Internet, Java, PlayStation and email, Dean Wutke was programming basic video games on his Commodore 64 and communicating with his buddies through bulletin board systems. He loved technology and, as he got older, began to appreciate how computers could increase the efficiency of business – another of his interests.

After high school Dean followed his passions to Douglas College. After taking general business for a year he noticed there were far more Douglas College Co-operative Education job postings in computer systems programs than in business. He made the switch into Computer Information Systems, and has never looked back.

For almost 10 years, Dean has worked at G&F Financial Group, in Vancouver. Currently the Network Manager, he is responsible for planning and managing the overall technology infrastructure for the company, which includes the deployment of virtual servers, enterprise storage and networking technologies.

He says that being in technology has kept him consistently busy, with no lack of jobs.

“Even while travelling overseas I used my education and skills to land jobs in Australia while on a working student holiday visa,” he recalls. “One job had me rewriting code for a nervous engineering firm that thought all their systems would fail on January 1, 2000.”

Dean also says the Douglas College Co-operative Education Program has played a big part in his success.

“The co-op program helped me get some real work experience in my area of education,” he says. “My first employer in technology out of college told me he wouldn’t have hired me without that experience.

“Douglas College really laid down the foundation for my career,” he continues. “It gave the training and confidence to apply and get my first jobs and beyond. The diploma is respected by employers.”
